Blocked Drainage – A Stellar Headache!.
At the end of a tough day’s work, you get into the shower and enjoy the buzz of hot water on your face and then, suddenly your toes seem to go under water too – Oh no, the drain pipe is choked once again!. It’s definitely not a very good feeling! A clogged up drainpipe sounds horrible to begin with. And it’s not confined to the bath and shower, you could be brushing your teeth getting ready for bed only to be confronted with the sink filling up rapidly. Clearing blocked drainage is something everyone wants to avoid because it’s such a messy task and the defective drainage make one appear unhygienic (and that’s what those drainage are). But the fact is that sooner or later, a bathroom drainpipe is going to become clogged up or suffer a blockage. So you should know how to unclog them, well in advance.
What causes a choked drain?.
Hair, dust and other particles getting stuck in the space between the drain and the pipes are the main cause. Everyday products like soaps, shampoos, detergents and so on add to the problem by building up around the solid material. When the accumulation reaches a level of thickness that constrains the free movement of water, the problem is pointed out as blocked drain pipe. If your sink or tub fills up fast with water while it should have drained out quickly, you could be in for a serious case of clogged pipes.
How do you unblock your drainage?.
If you want your water to start flowing freely then there are a few things you can do to rectify the problem. The first thing that you need to do is to remove the plug of your sink or bathtub drain. In case of a bathroom sink, the plug can be removed easily with a simple pull or it might need the complex effort of unlocking the hook keeping it in place from under the sink. In case of your bath, the plug can be unscrewed at the mouth of the drainage or the overflow plate can be removed to expose the assembly.
You may be able to see the clog clearly after the stopper has been taken out. Those greasy lumps of entangled hair and residue can be seen sticking to the sides and corners of the drain pipe. Try to pull it out, as much as you can. If the mass is located in a region, where it is difficult for you to grasp it and pull it out, then use a wire clothes hanger to dig into the clump and pull it back through the drainpipe pipe. This step of removing the residual clumps will remove the local blockage at your drain pipe point.
However, there is a chance that you will not be able to reach the blockage with the wire so you will have to try something else. blockages which are very deep can be removed with the help of a drain pipe plunger. Begin by covering the overflow drain pipe with a wet towel so as to create a stronger suction from the plunger. Now put the plunger over the drain and move it up and down continuously at an even pace. If you are successful, any water, if trapped, will be instantly drained when the plunger is released.
If the plunger also fails to clean your bathroom drainpipe, then you should take the help of chemical drain pipe cleaner. However this should be your last resort because the chemicals used can harm your bathroom fittings and accessories, they are corrosive.
Get skilled help if this is necessary, call in a drainage contractor.
If all the do-it-yourself methods fail, then call a plumber experienced in drains work to do the needful. Plumbers have special equipment to clean the obstructed drains speedily and effortlessly such as a drainage snake, drainage contractors also employ water jetting to clear blockages and cctv drains cameras to view inside the drainpipe. Although availing plumber services can be a costly proposal it gives you the much needed peace of mind as the water starts flowing and the mess is cleaned up.
