Clear out those plugged drains promptly

What are some easy home remedies for eliminating blocked drains in your bathroom? The quickest and simplest thing to use to address the problem is your typical plunger. The entire process of opening choked drain with a plunger is simple and straightforward. But don’t just shove the plunger into the drain pipe and start pumping it violently, you could make matters much worse. The most effective procedure to adopt is to cover the drainage completely with the bell-shaped head of the plunger and push down gently, then come up quickly and forcefully creating suction. In theory the suction created by pulling up quickly will dislodge the material that is clogging your bathtub, toilet or sink. You may notice small overflow openings in your bath or sink and you should always remember to block these up with a wet paper towel or sponge to create maximum suction.

You can also use chemical cleaners you can buy in the shops to unclog your drain pipe, these uses certain chemicals to open up the blockage in the drain pipe. However this option should be used only after you have used the plunger to unclog your drainpipe. You should allow the chemicals time to take effect and then, once the material that is clogging the drainpipe has been disintegrated you can flush it out with hot water. Wear proper clothes while dealing with chemicals, remember the strong chemicals can spill on your clothes and spoil them so be careful with that. Eye protection is not a bad idea either if you plan on plunging again in case there is any residual back splash of chemical laden water. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before use to make sure everything goes smoothly.

You can use a pipe wrench or pliers to unscrew the P-trap if you are unable to remove the clog with the plunger, this will give you access to the pipe. You should have a bucket and a towel handy as this can be a really dirty job. In order to avoid scratching the chrome surface of your pipes while at the same time getting a tight hold up them, you can cover the metal jaws of your wrench with electrical tape. Once you have removed the P-trap you can inspect the trap thoroughly for any blockage. If the plunger, the chemical or trap removal does not help, then the blockage could be much deeper in the pipework.

To unclog the toilet, you should use a toilet auger to get at these deep seated stoppages. A drainage snake should be used if you are trying to unclog your sink or tub. Plumbers drainage snakes have been specifically designed to enter deep into the narrow pipes. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the blockage from the drainpipe. After removing the blockage, reassemble the P-trap and let hot water flow into the drain pipe to double check it works properly. Make sure that everything is tight and sealed properly and test the P-trap for leaks.

If all these methods fail then you need to call in a professional plumber. Some common problems that are beyond the capabilities of the common homeowner are stoppages in the soil stack or the sewer service by tree roots or even a collapsed pipe which could be the result of old age or deterioration of the pipes because of Mother Nature or an unforeseen Act of God.
