Plugged drains can be challenging for a householder.

We have all been there – we’re in the shower, and suddenly we feel the water start to rise up around our feet. Yuck! A clogged drain. You are hurriedly brushing your teeth, and before you can even blink your eyes, the sink is brimming over with water. Nobody likes to deal with clogged drainage because they are a real hassle and they give an impression of being unsanitary (because they are). But it is something that most people will have to deal with every once in a while. So you should know how to unblock them, well in advance.

Why do drains get clogged up?.

Hair, dust and other particles getting stuck in the space between the drain pipe and the pipes are the main cause. The condition gets worse when products like conditioners, shampoos and detergents accumulate in the already stopped drainage. As the mass grows, it restricts the free flow of water, and the drain pipe eventually becomes stopped. When waste water drainage very slowly or just stands stubbornly in the washbasin, you know you have a plugged drain problem.

Some effective ways to unclog your bathroom drain pipe are listed below.

If you happen to have a blocked sink or bathtub, there are some steps you can take to clear up the passage ways and create a normal flow once again. First of all the plug should be removed. In case of a bathroom sink, the plug can be removed easily with a simple pull or it might need the complex effort of unlocking the hook keeping it in place from under the sink. With respect to the bath, the screws have to be loosened to remove the stopper or the overflow plate has to be dismantled.

It is important to remove the stopper because only then you can view the things that are clogging the drain inside the drain pipe. It is very likely to look like a small mass of hair and debris wrapped around the drain pipe’s hardware. Try to pull it out, as much as you can. If the mass is located in a region, where it is difficult for you to grasp it and pull it out, then use a wire clothes hanger to dig into the clump and pull it back through the drain pipe. Your drainpipe is likely to get unclogged if you remove the soap scum, hair and other particles from it that you can see.

In a case of deeper clogging, your hand or hooked wire may not do the trick – you may have to try the next step. A plunger will be helpful next step in removing clogs that are out of the reach of your hand. Ensure that you have placed a wet rag on the overflow drain pipe – this will produce better suction pressure from the plunger. Next, place the plunger directly over the drainpipe opening and methodically pulse the plunger up and down several times. When you let go of the plunger, any excess water should flow out right away if you have dislodged the blockage.

Even the plunger may not clear the most dense and hardened matter inside your plumbing – that’s when you will have to deploy a chemical drain pipe clearing product. This method should only be used as a last resort because the chemicals used are dangerous and can be harmful to your bathroom fixtures.

Call a professional plumber if all else fails.

If you are unable to unclog the drains even after trying all the methods, it is only advisable to call a professional plumber who has experience of drains work. Plumbers should have equipment that can help unblock drainage quickly and easily. It may cost you, but you will find it is worth the money once you can use your sink and shower worry free.
