Tips to unclog a drain and delight the homeowner

A blocked drain is not a joke and every home owner has been a victim of one at some time. In case of a complete blockage, the bathtub, sink, shower and the toilet can get filled with waste water that you have used. In such a situation, the blockage should be removed immediately however it is not very easy to do so with the household methods. At times like this, calling a professional plumber can cost you a fortune. The money that the plumber would charge depends on the extent of blockage, higher the blockage, the higher would be the cost. Only when multiple blockages occur in your house may you then you realise the mistake of not taking precautionary measures.

Now what exactly leads to clogging of the drains?.

The first thing that is responsible for clogging of drains is your own carelessness. To prevent your kitchen drain from getting clogged, the drain strainer should be used regularly to pull off the food particles from the drain. This is important because these particles can accumulate over a period of time and lead to clogged drains. To make matters worse, cooking grease and/or oil can build up in the pipes (or on a developing clog). The primary cause of toilet blockages is flushing amounts of toilet paper beyond what is needed down it.

Flushing items not intended for the toilet is also a main cause of clogged toilet drains. Sanitary towels and baby nappies can choke up a toilet immediately or after some time. When hair becomes stuck in pipes and gathers inside, showers, baths and sinks may become blocked. Frequent usage of soaps, shampoos, hair gel and toothpaste can worsen the blockage further.

Unfortunately, clogs can occur as a result of problems that have nothing to do with what you put into your drains. Some common plumbing problems faced are due to crushed drains, rusted pipes, tree roots and scale.

Solutions to your blocked drainage:.

You can give a try and clear the blocked drains with the help of acids and other chemicals which are specifically designed for this purpose. However you should note that using such chemicals can be harmful for health and environment and can also damage the pipes and fixtures. Luckily, there are also natural methods of clearing drain blockages. Running boiling water through the drains regularly is one natural method available. Another involves the utilisation of vinegar and baking soda. For this you should first put some vinegar in the blocked drain and then sprinkle baking soda over it. Wait for 15 minutes, and then rinse the drain with boiling water – that should do the trick and flush out the blockage.

Inspect and Prevent Instead.

The plumbing system works in the same manner as your car or any other machine. Proper examination and prevention is better than facing a blocked drain. You can do an inspection yourself since you are aware of how the drains function and how a blockage occurs, thus being alert about the current situation within your pipelines. In order to truly avoid the hassle and expense of seriously clogged drains you must have all of your household drains inspected on a regular basis by a qualified plumber. As a preventative measure, you should also have a plumbing technician snake all of your drain lines once a year or so. However you can get them snaked more frequently too in case your drains are prone to getting clogged. CCTV surveillance should be employed every now and again for important pipe connections.

It is essential that you check your pipelines periodically in order to avoid frustrating and costly problems later.
